He was born in 1759 in England. (8) He served in the military in 1776 in Fairfield Dist., South Carolina. Served three months, two of which were as substitute for two of his brothers, names not given) in Captain Jacob Love's, Colonel John Wynn's South Carolina Regiment and was stationed at the barracks in Chaleston. He served in the military in 1780 in Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. Volunteered in 1780, served in Captian Thomas Taylors South Carolina Regiment and was in the battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. Length of this service was about two years. He served in the military in 1783 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. Served six months under the officer under which he had served in 1780 and was stationed at Orangeburg. He died on 15 Jan 1840 in Hayneville, Lowndes County, Alabama. Tombstone in Sawyer Cemetery in Sandy Ridge, Lowndes County, Mississippi: IVEY, Elijah, 10-27-1830, 7-24-1865 This is possibly his son Elijah P. Ivey He died on 25 Jan 1840 in Ivey Family Cemetery, Ivey Plantation, Whitehall, Lowndes County, Alabama.(9) He was buried in Lowndes County, Alabama. NOTES: Elijah Ivey came to the U. S. with some brothers, settled in South Carolina. He was a participant in the Rev. War, and after he died, his minor son claimed and received pension benefits. Family believes these brothers were John, Edward, Henry, Robert and Mike Ivey. Census of 1800 Fairfield Dist., S. C. shows brother John with two minor children, and Elijah with 9 children: two girls and seven boys. It is believed he owned many slaves and migrated with members of his family to Lowndes Co., Montgomery Co. and near Tuscaloosa, Alabama from South Carolina in about 1820. At this date there are numerous descendants of Elijah Ivey residing throughout the Southern United States. Children of Elijah Ivey are named in order they were named in his will, executed in Lowndes Co. AL 17 Oct 1839, probated 3 Feb 1840, Lowndes Co.,AL. Additional names of children not named in will were obtained from Theodosia Long in 1949 while visiting with her in Lee Co. MS. by Dallas A. and Lucille Webb Johnson, and from written history of Helen Long Mooring in 1952. Elijah Ivey reportedly was married four or five times. The first nine children were reportedly from his first wife, name unknown. No children were known to exist of marriages two and three. His fourth marriage reportedly was to a Mary Hartin, from which marriage three boys were born, Asa, Curtis and Elijah, Jr., who were minors at the time of his death in January 1840. He was reportedly married a fifth time, but no children were known to have ensued from this marriage. Some of his family settled in Hayneville, Lowndes County, Alabama, others in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, and other in the city of Montgomery Marriage records of Lowndes Co., AL show the following marriages of Elijah Ivey, believed to be the progenitor of this family: 19 Dec 1839 Hannah Haginbottom. (This could be the fifth wife) 10 Mar 1833 (Year illegible) Mary Caroline Harrison. (This possibly could be the Mary Hartin referred to above. Elijah Ivey enrolled for Alabama Revolutionary Pension in Lowndes County,Alabama in 1833, age 74 years, and was granted a pension. Pension # 515188 South Carolina. Copy of his application in the Pension Bureau, Washington DC. Bounty Land Warrant issued June 15, 1857, Bounty land Warrant 67525, 160 acres 1855 On Oct 9, 1859 "sold to Wm A. Bradford, assignment acknowledged in De Soto Parish, Louisiana. Bradford located warrant on the w 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec 7, T- 11, R 14 and the E 1/2 SE 1/4, sec 12, T-11, R. 15 in District of Lands, subject to sale at Natchetohes, La Oct 26, 1859. SO ELIJAH IVEY CAME TO AMERICA WHEN HE WAS 17 YEARS OLD TO FIGHT WITH THE COLONISTS AGAINST THE BRITISH. HE ENLISTED IN 1776, AS A PVT. WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA MILITIA IN FAIRFIELD DISTRICT WITH HIS BROTHERS. HE RE-ENLISTED WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA MILITIA AGAIN IN 1870. IN 1790 HE WAS RESIDING IN THE ORANGEBURG DISTRICT, S.C. HE MOVED HIS ENTIRE FAMILY TO LOWNDES CO., ALA. AND SETTLED ON A PLANTATION ADJOINING THE "EDWARDS" LAND AT WHITE HALL, SOMETIME IN THE 1820'S. HIS FIRST LAND GRANT WAS IN 1819 IN LOWDNES CO. IN TOWNSHIP 16 N, RANGE 14 EAST, SEC. 30. HE WAS MARRIED 4 OR 5 TIMES. THE FIRST TWO OR THREE MARRIAGES WERE PROBABLY IN S.C., BUT THE NAMES OF THE WIVES ARE UNKNOWN. HE MARRIED HIS THIRD OR FOURTH WIFE, MARY HARTEN (HARTIN) IN AUG 1829 IN FAIRFIELD DIST., S.C. NEAR WINNSBORO. SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF HIS THREE YOUNGEST SONS AND SHE DIED ABOUT 1835, PROBABLY AFTER, OR DURING THE BIRTH OF HER YOUNGEST SON. ELIJAH IVEY'S LAST WIFE WAS HANNAH HAGINBOTTOM WHOM HE MARRIED ON DEC 19,1839 IN LOWNDES CO. ALA. BEFORE THIS LAST MARRIAGE HE HAD MARRIED ISABELLA HOLLIS, IN AUTAUGA CO. ON JULY 27, 1836.
