NOTES: Hans Balziger shows up in the early church records of Orangeburg Dist., SC. It appears that he emigrated from either Switzerland or Germany with a group of other German speaking persons who came to the Colonies to settle in the German speaking community of Orangeburg as they were all protestants escaping from the Palatinate to avoid persecution. They were probably Calvinists, however, when they reached the Colonies the minister who accompanied them took them into the Episcopal faith. Hans Balziger shows up in the early church records of that settlement as sponsoring several different individuals into baptism or confirmation. His wife is shown only as Mary. John Balziger, Jr. may have been born before they left Europe, but this is not certain, as no passenger lists have yet been located. It appears that later in successive generations their name was changed to BALTZEGAR and BALZEGAR.
