end of profile [3] - Lettie was enumerated with her older sister, Lucinda and her husband, Peter Cantrell, in the "Blue Springs" district of DeKalb County, in 1870...DAH.
IGI identifies her mother as "Mahala C.".
5 Oct 2011:
Telephone conversation with "Junior" Harding - tells me that he remembers seeing her when is was about 6 years old. That put a date to her death...DAH
Years ago I contacted the intitution where she was committed to ascertain her exact mental condition however was informed that there had been a fire, flood & hurricane which destroyed all records...DAH
7 Oct 2011:
Spoke to Bruce Gilmore at the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute. He told me that the "Central State Hospital Cemetery" is no longer extant. His predecessor did collect 200 records of the 1600 persons buried in this graveyard which began during the Civil War.
Alas, no records for Lettie...DAH
end of comment [13] - I cannot remember the source who told me that she was committed to the insane asylum and was buried in Nashville. I did contact the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute for any paper work they would have on Lettie. I was informed that two separate fires had destroyed most of their case histories. DAH

State Mental Hospitals
Tennessee?s first facility for the mentally ill, Tennessee Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1840 Nashville as the eleventh institution for mentally ill in United States. Dorothea Dix, American activist on behalf of the indigent insane, visited Tennessee in 1847 and found Nashville asylum deficient. She implored the Legislature to purchase a larger site for a new hospital. The next year Legislature appropriated $40,000 for new hospital for insane. A site purchased on Murfreesboro Turnpike southeast of Nashville. Tennessee Hospital for the Insane (now Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute) opened with 60 patients transferred from old asylum.
