RECORD OF THE IVEY FAMILY

Prepared by Miss Ila Long, Saltillo, Miss.

Elijah Ivey was the maternal grandfather of Martha Missouri (Long) Bonnett, and was born in the year 1759, somewhere in England place not known.

Elijah Ivey and his brothers, John, Edward, Henry, Robert and Mike Ivey, and Savannah Ivey, a widow who must have been an aunt by marriage, were born and reared in England and later were heads of families in Fairfield District, S. C. They came or immigrated from England to South Carolina before the American Revolutionary War. Elijah and Henry Ivey, and another of the brothers served in the Revolutionary War for the independence of the Colonies. Elijah Ivey came over at the early age of 17 years for the sole purpose of serving in the interest of the depressed Colonies—his older brothers having preceded him here.

Elijah Ivey enlisted in the Army in Fairfield District (County), South Carolina In the spring of 1776, served three months two of which were as substitute for two of his brothers (their names are not given) in Captain Jacob Love's Company, Colonel John Wynn's South Carolina Regiment and was stationed at the barracks in Charleston. He volunteered in 1780 (exact date not given), served in Captain Thomas Taylor's South Carolina Regiment and was in the battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, length of this last service about two years; in 1783 he enlisted in Orangeburg District (County), South Carolina, and served six months under the officers last named above, and was stationed in Orangeburg (city).

Elijah Ivey was the maternal grandfather of Martha Missouri (Long) Bonnett. He married and settled in Fairfield District (County), South Carolina after the close of the Revolutionary War. His first wife, whose name is now for gotten, was half Irish and half English (place of birth not known).

Children of his first marriage were: sons, William, Thomas, Samuel and Jesse Ivey; daughters, Sallie, who married a Mr. Tatum, Polly, who married a Mr. McBride, Nancy, who married Mr. William Aldridge, Martha, who married Alex Long, father of Martha Missouri (Long) Bonnett, and another (name forgotten), who married Mr. Zach Edwards.

Children of his second marriage were none. Children of his third marriage all died in Infancy.

His fourth marriage was to Miss Mary Herten (or Hartin) about 1828, 1829, or 1830. (All of these dates were given.) This marriage is recorded as taking place near Winslow, Fairfield District, South Carolina.  She died in the latter part of 1835, where they lived in Alabama, probably at Haynesville or Tuscaloosa, exact place forgotten.  She may have died near Haynesville, Lowndes County, Ala.

Children of this, his fourth marriage were three sons: Curtis, Asa and Elijah P. Ivey, all of whom were born in south Alabama, probably in Lowndes County. The last named, was the youngest and was born September 28 or29, in 1835. Asa Ivey, the second of these died in 1855.

Children of his fifth and last marriage were none.

Elijah Ivey, the soldier, died about January 15, 1840, as a result of injuries received from a fall from a horse or a carriage, shortly after his fifth and last marriage, at the age of 81 years.

Henry Ivey, brother of Elijah Ivey, was paid by the state of South Carolina, for ninety-eight days of military duty in 1782. Alabama Revolutionary Pension Records show that Elijah Ivey enrolled in Lowndes County, Alabama, in 1833, at the age of 74years, and was granted a pension for his service in the Revolutionary war. Copy of his application in the Pension Bureau, Washington, D. C. would probably have interesting family data, and his war record in detail.

Martha Ivey, daughter of Elijah Ivey, the soldier, married Alex Long about the year of 1809 in Fairfield District, South Carolina, Alex Long was a man of uncommon intellectual powers. He was a genius in mechanics and in architecture. He had a most remarkable, or extraordinary talent for music, also he was highly gifted in the fine art of creating poetry.  Nothing is known at the present time of his place of birth, although it is known that he was pure Irish born of pure Irish parents in 1788 or 1789.,

Some of them settled at Haynesville, Lowndes County; others near Tuscaloosa, and some in and others around Montgomery, Ala. The family, being owners of vast numbers of slaves, moved with a train of wagons and carriages drawn by horses. They purchased and worked plantations where they bought and settled around the above named places in Alabama.

They lived at this place in Neshoba County only one year; and in the fall of 1849 they bought lands and moved to Guntown, Itawamba (now Lee) County, Mississippi, where they lived 27years, until they bought lands and removed to Saltillo, Mississippi in the fall of 1876.
