Dear Mr. Clontz

In response to your query on the Gilmer county web site, I have the
following information. I believe it is from a geneaologic history of
the area in Texas to which John Robert Craigo, grandson of Annie Clontz,
moved in 1900.

Samuel Clontz born 4 Feb 1801 married in 1822 to Sarah (9 Jan 1804 -
1868). Their children were M.A. Clontz (31 May 1823, a baptist
minister), Dock, William P., Samuel A. II, martin L., peggy Jane,
Benjamin P., G. Christian S. (died 1863); Mary L. A. (died 1867),
Milligan C. (died 12 Sept 1947). Sam I married for second time in 1870
to Anna Arminda Kincaid, one son named Rufus.

(I have to say that the dates make me wonder if it was Sam II that
married Anna Arminda.)

The above is in a notebook facing a page on the Clontz (information
below) to whom i am related, so I would think that Annie was a child in
this family, but I wonder why i didn't write it down. As I recall,
Annie was the daughter of either Jake or Sam Clontz. The first Sam was
either from Germany or the son of someone from Germany, by memory.

William Alexander Craigo b. 1822 m. Annie E. Clontz
Children:
1:Sarah Rebecca born 5 Sep 1849, died 1887
married 15 Dec 1872 to Rev. Lew D. Ellington (14 Apr 1846 - 15 May
1927)
2:Thomas Winn (27 June 1851 - 7 Mar 1930)
married Alice Greer daughter of thomas greer (Alice died 13 May 1949);
Alice and Thomas Craigo had sons Robert, Will, Tom jr; After Thomas
Craigo died, Alice married Rev. Joe Chastain
3: William Wright 7 Nov 1853 - 12 Dec 1893
4: John Robert b. 19 July 1856
5: Matilda Cordelia

Hope this is of some use.

David:

The only thing I have in my data base about these two people comes from Family Tree Maker, World Family Tree, Vol 14, Tree 0596. I do not know who the submitter is, but if you are a subscriber, as I am, there is a way to find out.

George and Chloe were contemporaries of Michael Cline and Fannie Killian.George, whose full name, as given on the referenced family tree, Michael George Clontz, was born May 1760. He married Chloe in August 1783. He died October 20, 1838.

His father is listed as Hance (John) Micalle Glance (Clontz). His mother as Margaret.

Chloe is listed as having been born about 1766 and died March 1, 1847. Her parents do not appear. The tree contains the names of their 8 children, but does not list any spouses for any of the children.

Hope this helps. It's all I can find in my library or files that fits, date wise and other wise.

* Listed as 20-30 years old, 1 female child under 5 and 1 female 15-20.

and next:

Lourena Smith, age 1, appears in household of John Clonts, 1860, Gilmer Co.,GA

and next:

I've concluded that JOHN CLONTS was a brother to SAMUEL CLONTS.

Based on family lore that

(1) Samuel came to North Georgia with a brother
(2) biographical similarities, i.e., birth-dates, birth-states, and
(3) traditional family names given their offspring
(4) Norman Clontz' family group records and
(5) Loie Clontz Christie's identification of George's children in a letter written to Mr. R.H. Clontz, October 23, 1972.

and next:

Per Helen Casada, "He (John) is buried at Old Cartecay Cemetery which is in a pasture. There are 10 or 11 marked graves. No other CLONTZ. However, on each side of John's grave is a grave marked only with a field stone."

Conclusion: John was married when he came to Georgia in circa 1833 based on diary entries of William Thomas Prestwood. WTP alludes to John's wife and notes that John moved...

There are marriage records for John to Irene Dunn, in 1838, and testimony of Mahala Hembree that she married a man named, John Clonts, in 1851, in Gilmer County, Georgia. Therefore, John is married three times.

and next:

The two children, Momoc & John, listed in the 1870 census with his second wife, Mahala, seem unlikely to be his children or even Mahala's because

(1) why would John have two children named "John" and

(2) given Mahala's age, it doesn't seem biologically possible for her to have had these two.

Of course, the forename, Momoc, is intriguing. Is it Indian? Could he have been of Mahala's family since she claims Indian heritage? Or are Momoc and John simply neighborhood children who happened to have been in John's household when the census-taker was on his rounds?

Testimonial evidence given by Mahala in her 1908 petition for land and money in the Indian Territory (Oklahoma), identifies her children beginning with Margaret - her oldest. No mention was made of Momoc or the first John which further supports the thesis that neither child was the off-spring of John and Mahala.

Further research suggests that "Momoc" should read "Monroe"...John R. Clonts.

and next:

1910 DeKalb County Census cites John's birth state as South Carolina. Julia cites Georgia for her mother's birth state and South Carolina for her father.

and next:

John R. Clonts, Hacienda Heights, CA, has found evidence that progenitor John was a veteran of the Florida-Indian Wars. While in the Carlsbad, CA library he found the following:

"Index to Volunteer Soldiers in Indian Wars and Disturbances 1815-1858 Vol: 1 A -K;

Clouts, John, Pvt, serv in Cody's Co. of 1st Ga Mtd Vols in Fl War

Index to Indian wars Pension Files in 1892-1926, p. 290;

Clouts, John, wid Mahala C., WC727 Ga 10 Sept 1892, Fl War Srv"

and next:

Mahala, his wife, describes John as 5' 11", light-colored hair, blue eyes, fair complexion and could not write...

562 Good morning Cuz,

I noticed you've been doing quite a bit of updating.

One small detail, the current entry for my grandmother Annie states "married Monte Lafayette Patterson 19 Jun 192?, " The date is June 19, 1929. She married two days after she turned 16.

Interesting that the 1900 Census, with John D. Patterson as the father of Mont L Patterson, shows him as being 18, i.e. born in 1882. The death certificate shows he was born in 1892. I think the error is in the census. His age is 7 on the census, his name appears in birth order. I looked at the census record; a complete copy is attached.

I am glad that Fred's friends remember him. I met him at FAU and we were good friends, (as I remain close with his older brother David to this day). Fred was in his Fiat on Congress Ave, waiting at the light (the cross street was either Forest Hill Blvd or 10th in West Palm). A drunken women plowed into the Fiat's driver's side. Fred was rushed to Good Sam. Hospital, was in a coma, and died six hours later never regaining consciousness. Fred loved Florida, brought the Rolling Stones to the speedway and was a local Head Hunter before going into telephone sales. Before he died, he had found an inner peace and felt that his life was in order. Thanks again for remembering our friend. -unnamed writer

Robert Jordan Fred Hennessee, or just Fred as everyone called him, was part of the surfer crowd.. always sun burnt and bleached blonde. I remember around 1966, when we were in the 10th or 11th grade, Fred was attacked by a shark while waiting for a wave to swell.. the shark bit his arm I think and he wore an arm bandage and sling, and he was quite proud of it.. After graduation, I don't know where he went to college but I think he worked in Palm Beach. And when I was home for a long Christmas break in 1980, Dave Rubinson told me that Fred had died in his Porsche while sitting at a red light in Palm Beach near the Breakers Hotel.. and I'm not sure when in 1980 that was, maybe the summer. What I recall hearing was a speeding drunk driver failed to brake in time and hit him from behind totaling his Porsche 911 and killing him on the spot. He wasn't 30 years old. Porsches were well known as death traps. More I can't tell you. This is all from what I recall Rubinson told me. And Dave Rubinsons', my best friend in college, word was his bond. I don't know where he was interned.. but I'm sure he's waiting for the perfect wave somewhere.. over there.
6.2.2009

Debbie Miller Wert I agree you cannot think of Fred without seeing him on his surf board, they seemed to go hand in hand. I could have sworn it was his foot or ankle that got bit by the shark...guess my mind is getting older than I thought. Debbie Miller Wert

6.6.2009

Robert Jordan Hi Debbie, Thanks for adding your memories of Fred. We weren't friends, he was in the surfer clique, which I had no access to. Robert didn't surf LOL. But, if my memory serves me, it was his right arm.. that was bitten. I think it happened down by the Pump House or The Ship, The Greek cargo ship aka the Amaryliss (sp?) which went aground during Hurricane Betsy over Labor Day weekend in 1965. That much I remember well, we lost a day of school, had to start the fall semester late! And even tho I didn't know Fred that well, I did talk to him about his shark attack.. Of course there were witnesses out there that day.. most of the surfer crowd, and they were sitting on their boards waiting for a wave.. when either a Nurse or Sand shark attacked him. Had it been a huge shark such as a Great White, which were probably not native to Florida waters, he wouldn't have lived to tell the story.. and as he told it he was just sitting there and then began to paddle when he was attacked.. He was out of school for a day or so then showed up with his arm bandaged and in a sling. When I asked him about it he just shrugged.. if you didn't know him well, he could be a bit removed. When I heard about his car crash in late 1980, I thought oh my Lord poor Fred.. like on his surf board, he was just sitting in his Porsche waiting for a light to change.. A wave or a light, same thing.. something was out to get him. I don't know what happened to the drunk driver. But I hope he was arrested and charged with not only DWI, but whatever the law could throw at him, so he either did time, or never drove a car again.

Hans Baltziger was born on 25 Sep 1696 in Switzerland. He died on 4 Jul 1756 in Orangeburg Dist., S. C..

"Died on Sunday, July 4 after some months illness and on Monday July 5th was interred in the Church yard of Orangeburgh, the boyd of John Balziger, Senior. of the said township of Orangeburgh, Anno Otato, 59 years, 9 month, 9 months, 9 days (Rev. Giessendanner) He was buried on 5 Jul 1756 in Pioneer Graveyard, Bull Street, Orangeburg, South Carolina.(2) He was christened.

NOTES: Hans Balziger shows up in the early church records of Orangeburg Dist., SC. It appears that he emigrated from either Switzerland or Germany with a group of other German speaking persons who came to the Colonies to settle in the German speaking community of Orangeburg as they were all protestants escaping from the Palatinate to avoid persecution. They were probably Calvinists, however, when they reached the Colonies the minister who accompanied them took them into the Episcopal faith. Hans Balziger shows up in the early church records of that settlement as sponsoring several different individuals into baptism or confirmation. His wife is shown only as Mary. John Balziger, Jr. may have been born before they left Europe, but this is not certain, as no passenger lists have yet been located. It appears that later in successive generations their name was changed to BALTZEGAR and BALZEGAR.
